I started Beginner Ceramics in March of 2021 after joining a local ceramics studio and immediately falling in love with the process. Having worked with clay in college, it was a return to the medium after 21 years, and more importantly felt like a return to my true self.
Exploring form with the mind of a beginner and creating with joy is the goal with every piece. I want the work to impart the wonder and curiosity I feel in making it.
For the past two decades I’ve worked with artists to produce large-scale sculptures using many methods and materials (metal, wood, foam, concrete, water, flowers, airplanes!). After rediscovering clay, I decided to take a chance on myself and in June of 2022 I left my job to pursue Beginner Ceramics full-time!
Imbued with my love of art and design, and influenced by those methods of production - each piece is exuberantly and meticulously made by my hand in Brooklyn, New York.

I use many different methods and processes to create each piece, and love experimenting in the studio. That’s the beauty of ceramics - there are so many ways to learn. I make all my larger vases in sections on the pottery wheel and assemble them (using them as building blocks), this way there is no limit to the forms I can create.
My glaze colors were chosen through much experimentation. I love all the different combinations that can be had from a limited palette. There’s so much joy in discovering a new color combination. If you’d like a custom combination, email us and we can collaborate.
Time is the most important element in the process. Each piece is carefully and slowly dried so it doesn’t crack or break. Vases are covered in plastic to control the moisture. There is no hard and fast rule for amount of drying time, it is always different depending on the geometry and how complicated a piece is. Once fired, clay is super durable, but very delicate during the making process. Time and patience is of the utmost importance (aside from fun ;)
